The Outline of Ajigasawa town

Ajigasawa Town is located on the west coast of Aomori Prefecture. With an area of 342.99km2, it is the 6th largest town in the prefecture, stretching 22km from East to West and 40km North to South. Ajigasawa meets the Sea of Japan in the north and the World Heritage site of the Shirakami Mountain range and Akita Prefecture in the south. Built up areas are mainly located on the coast, with about 40 smaller villages dotted along the three main river systems; Akaishi, Nakamura and Narusawa. Approximately 80 percent of land is wooded, with about 20,000ha of rich national forests along the headwaters of Akaishi and Nakamura rivers.

Ajigasawa has a rich history. Various tombstones suggest villages were present dating back to when China was divided. Founder of the Tsugaru Clan Oura Mitsunobu settled in Tanesato in 1491 and left his mark there. The prosperity of the town grew as it became an important port of call for ships to the Tsugaru province.

Ajigasawa officially became a town in 1888 and has been the center of politics and economy in the western Tsugaru region ever since. Present day Ajigasawa Town was formed by the merging of Ajigasawa Town and Akaishi, Nakamura, Narusawa and Maito villages in 1955.
